A 50 chat and game volume problem

I have an old A 50 headset that works perfectly and just bought a new (black and blue model) A 50 headset that works almost perfectly. The problem with the new headset is the game and chat volume buttons on the side of the ear piece dont seem to work. one side (which is supposed to be for chat) turns both chat and game volume down. the other side (supposed to be for game volume) turns both chat and game volume up.
Anybody have any ideas on how this can be fixed?
